Mr.Bluk Illustrations

A once local colorful doughnut store full of explosive flavors, unique toppings, and crazy dessert combinations. Can’t also forget the cool friends with unique personalities. I was approached by Sasha Rulán and Daniel Salinas, the owners of the once store and concept of Mr. Bluk, for some illustrations project for their branding and marketing fields. The main character, Mr. Bluk, already existed, and it was created by a local artist named Kevin Garcia, this time my clients needed me to expand the universe with some new cool friends.

Origins

The main concepts were experimental funky desserts, with explosive flavors and colorful toppings. My clients were looking for cool, fresh designs with a mix of pop art patterns and comic halftones. I decided to redesign the whole project, including the main character since they were open to embracing a new look.

Revisions & Prototypes

As you can see, there were many changes and different creations of the food friends during the process. From weird little creatures to cartoony cool friends, my clients were looking for something that could’ve been embraced by anyone, especially kids. Some concepts didn’t make it (due to not being part of the menu) or went under a major makeover. Each food pal had either a special ability and a purpose or meaning in life. For example, the doughnut was a curious and adventurous friend (take note of the legs for traveling), while the ice cream scoop was playful and the coffee one was energetic and progressive.

Final Result

In the end, the clients decided to stay with the original concept of Mr.Bluk due to nostalgic reasons but were completely happy with the fresh and attractive designs of the dessert friends, patterns, and background.
